Establish who controls the keys
A self-custodial wallet and a custodial account create different responsibilities. Before comparing appearance or convenience, identify who can authorize spending and how access would be restored if a device or account became unavailable.
The Bitcoin wallet selection directory offers criteria for examining wallet characteristics. Verify current features in each project’s own documentation; this resource does not rank products or sell wallets.
Compare the workflow, not only the label
A wallet setup may combine a networked interface, a signing device, and a watch-only view. These roles are not interchangeable. Make sure the arrangement provides a readable way to review the destination, amount, and fee before authorizing a payment.
Plan recovery before relying on a setup
Read the wallet’s documented recovery requirements. A backup may involve secret material and other metadata; do not assume every wallet uses the same format. Keep recovery phrases and private keys out of explorer sites, support messages, and screenshots.
Test safely using the wallet’s documented approach before committing meaningful funds. Never enter a valuable existing seed into an unfamiliar application simply to experiment with recovery.
